Aston Martin Delays The Launch Of Its First All-Electric Car Again

, Aston Martin CEO Adrian Hallmark ordered a delay in the company's electric vehicle project immediately after joining the company. This means the launch of Aston Martin's first all-electric car has been postponed once again.

In 2024, Hallmark left his role as Bentley's CEO to join Aston Martin as its new chief executive. On January 29, he told the media, "During discussions about whether I should join the company, I questioned the electrification strategy." Hallmark is concerned that electric vehicle sales may be affected by changing emissions regulations and that moving too quickly could hurt Aston Martin's financial performance.

"We are not resisting. We are simply considering legislative developments and adapting accordingly. We cannot manufacture internal combustion engines, hybrids, and electric vehicles all at once, then determine which products are viable and discontinue the ones that aren't. Everyone has to be a winner."

Hallmark stated that Aston Martin will launch "at least one" all-electric vehicle before 2030, but its plan to release four electric models by then has been scrapped. Last year, the company aimed to launch its first EV by 2026, which was already a delay from earlier plans. However, Aston Martin will continue collaborating with U.S. electric vehicle company Lucid, which will supply motors, inverters, transmissions, and battery modules.

Aston Martin initially planned to base its first EV on an existing model and even released a sketch hinting at a sportier SUV lower than the current DBX. However, the company is now exploring "other possibilities." Hallmark did not provide further details.

For now, Aston Martin will focus on plug-in hybrid sports cars, starting with the plug-in hybrid version of the mid-engine Valhalla supercar this year. Hallmark mentioned that a front-engine plug-in hybrid model will be introduced "as soon as possible," though he did not specify a timeline or which models would be included.

Aston Martin is closely monitoring Rolls-Royce's moves in electrification. Rolls-Royce is significantly ahead of its ultra-luxury competitors in this transition. "We hope [Rolls-Royce's electrification efforts] succeed because if they do, it will secure a place for fully electric luxury cars in the market," Hallmark stated.
